ABOUT US
PROELECTRICAL - Trading Since 1999
Proelectrical is a locally owned Hawke's Bay business with deep roots
in the region's electrical infrastructure.
Our Heritage
Founded in 1999 by Brent Jeffares and Dave Robottom, Proelectrical was born from a decision to maintain quality and expertise during industry upheaval. Dave and Brent originally worked together as technicians for the M.E.D. (Municipal Electricity Department), covering all aspects of power transmission and general electrical work in downtown Napier. Through multiple restructures and name changes – Bay City Power, HB Power Board, and ultimately Unison – the pair worked side by side, building expertise across every facet of electrical infrastructure.
When yet another restructure loomed in 1999, Dave and Brent made the bold decision to venture out on their own. Within months, they opened the doors to Proelectrical in a small Onekawa workshop, bringing their combined decades of technical knowledge and commitment to quality workmanship to their own enterprise.

Building a Reputation
From those early days, Proelectrical established itself working alongside local lines companies and contracting firms, providing high voltage cable testing and specialist technical services. A core capability from day one has been our cable and fault locating services – expertise we’ve continuously refined and expanded over more than two decades. The company secured the electrical maintenance contract for Napier City Council – a partnership that continues today, with Proelectrical providing preventative maintenance and technical services ensuring the city’s water and wastewater systems operate effectively and efficiently.
Brent became involved in numerous housing subdivisions and builds, delivering smart and efficient electrical solutions whilst working collaboratively with clients and construction companies to meet deadlines and budgets. Dave focused on technical designs and implementation of telemetry and control systems throughout Hawke’s Bay, bringing his many specialised skills to bear on increasingly complex projects.

New Leadership, Growing Expertise
In 2010, Ricky Young joined Proelectrical as a residential electrician but quickly moved onto the industrial side of the business. After gaining additional experience in Australia’s mining and manufacturing sectors between 2012-2015, Ricky returned to specialise in control systems and instrumentation. In 2018, he purchased shares and became a director, gaining his electrical inspector’s certificate in 2022 and joining the New Zealand Inspectors Association (NZEIA). By 2023, Ricky had taken full ownership from Dave and Brent, ensuring Proelectrical’s values and expertise would continue under passionate leadership.
Our Team Today
Proelectrical has grown to include a team of specialists who are passionate about what they do and committed to delivering quality workmanship across all aspects of electrical work.
Jason Sayer, who started his apprenticeship with Proelectrical in 2006, leads our residential and commercial operations. With nearly two decades of experience gained entirely within the company, Jason brings extensive expertise in home electrical solutions and commercial projects, ensuring quality installations from design through to completion.
At the start of 2025, Andy Buckley joined the team as engineering manager, bringing vast experience in power quality, variable speed drives (VSDs), and electric motors. His expertise strengthens our technical capabilities in complex industrial applications, complementing our existing strengths in control systems, SCADA, and instrumentation.

Expanding Capabilities
Under Ricky’s leadership, Proelectrical has significantly expanded its specialist service offerings. Building on over 25 years of cable and fault locating experience, the company invested in advanced GPR utility mapping equipment and hydro excavation capabilities, becoming a BeforeUdig Certified Locator Partner in 2025 – recognition of our expertise and commitment to safe underground service location.
Our commitment extends beyond commercial work. Ricky volunteers at the local Repair Café, where he helps residents repair electrical items rather than discard them – a practical demonstration of the precision, problem-solving, and community focus that defines Proelectrical’s approach.

Today & Tomorrow
Proelectrical combines over two decades of infrastructure expertise with cutting-edge specialist capabilities and a team of dedicated professionals who are passionate about delivering quality workmanship.
